How we work01 – 04

Site visit, written plan, phases, one crew lead.

Verdant Row Landscape Co. designs, builds and looks after residential gardens and outdoor living spaces. We are a landscape design and maintenance company based in Chattanooga.

This page is about method, because method is what you are really hiring. Anyone can lay a patio. What differs is whether somebody thought about the whole garden first, wrote it down, and stayed with it until it was done.

The order of work

How a job runs from first visit to last phase.

  1. 01

    Site visit

We come to the property, walk it with you and look at what is there now. This comes first on every job, whatever its size.

  2. 02

    Written plan and scope

You receive a plan and a written scope that sets out what will be done. Nothing starts until you have it.

  3. 03

    Work in phases

The work is scheduled in phases rather than all at once, so each stage is finished properly before the next begins.

  4. 04

    One crew lead throughout

The same crew lead stays with your job from the first phase to the last. You are not explaining your garden again to someone new each time.

Who you deal with

The same crew lead, start to finish.

Work is scheduled in phases, and a phased job can easily turn into a relay, with a different face each time and details lost at every handover. We do not run jobs that way.

The same crew lead stays with your job. The person who was there when the first bed was cut is the person there when the last plant goes in, and they carry what was agreed with you from one phase to the next.

What guides the drawingA – C

Three rules behind every plan.

  • Suited to the Tennessee Valley

We choose plants that suit the Tennessee Valley climate, natives among them. A plant that is right for the place needs less rescuing and looks at home.

  • Regional materials where possible

Stone, gravel and other materials are sourced regionally where we can. A patio tends to sit more quietly in a garden when its stone comes from the same part of the country.

  • Designed to be maintainable

A garden is only as good as its upkeep. We design with the looking after in mind, so what we plant and build can be kept in shape without heroics.

Who we work for

Homeowners who want the garden thought about as a whole.

Our clients are homeowners. Some have established properties with gardens that have been added to over the years. Others have a newly built house and a lot that is still mostly bare earth.

What they have in common is that they want the garden designed as a whole and not piecemeal. If that is how you think about your own place, we will probably get on.

Common questions

Asked before most first visits.

What happens after I get in touch?

A site visit comes first. We come to the property and walk it with you. After that you receive a written plan and scope, and only then is work scheduled.

Will I get anything in writing before work starts?

Yes. You receive a written plan and scope before any work begins. For design work that includes a measured plan and a planting plan.

Can you tell me what it will cost over the phone?

Not usefully. We need to see the ground before we can say anything worth relying on. Ask for a quote and we will arrange a site visit, and the written scope follows from that.

Does everything have to be built at once?

No. Work is scheduled in phases. The plan shows the whole garden, and the building of it is staged.

Will the same people be on my job throughout?

The same crew lead stays with your job from start to finish, across every phase.

What kind of plants do you use?

Native plants and others suited to the Tennessee Valley climate. We choose for how well a plant will do here and how much looking after it will need.

Where do you work?

Chattanooga, Signal Mountain, Red Bank, Hixson and Lookout Mountain.

Do you only design gardens, or do you maintain them too?

Both. We design and build gardens, and we look after them with lawn care, irrigation work and seasonal care.
